Off-gridder here, been living this way for 13 years this September 4. I love every minute of it. It takes a certain kind of person, and by now I know myself to be that person. The quiet nights, the crisp morning air, the absence of electrical bills, it's all good.
For those of you getting into this, I want to recommend the companies I have gone with for most of my supplies. My advice is to do as much as you can yourself, and get a good electrician to go through things and advise or put his seal of approval.
Either of these is a good place to start for getting your panels, inverter, disconnect, breakers, and most of the rest. Most of this gear you can't find at a local hardware store or even at a local electrical supply place. Some of it you can, though. Things like wires and the rest.
One of these days I'll get around to posting some pictures of my setup.
